Astray (“Astray,” “we,” “us”) is a product of Formentia LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company. These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your use of the Astray website (astray.to), the Astray web app (app.astray.to), related APIs, map tiles, and services (together, the “Service”).

By using the Service, or by tapping “I agree” in the app, you agree to these Terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Astray. There are plenty of other scenic overlooks.

What Astray is for

Astray is a scenic route planner. Think of it as sketching an interesting line on a paper map, then getting in the car. It helps you explore roads that fit the time you have.

Astray does not provide turn-by-turn directions, voice guidance, lane guidance, or real-time guidance while you drive. When you want those, Astray can hand a planned route off to a maps app you already use (for example, Google Maps). That handoff is optional and covered by that other app’s terms once you leave.

If you need something that watches traffic lights and yells “left lane,” that’s a different product. Ours packs a thermos and a paper map.

We are cheerfully unaware of the present tense

Astray does not know about live traffic, road closures, accidents, construction, weather, temporary restrictions, or whether that charming forest road is actually gated, washed out, or full of logging trucks today.

Routes are planned from preprocessed map data. That data can be incomplete, outdated, wrong, or just weird. A suggested route is a suggestion. It does not promise the road is open, legal for your vehicle, or a good idea right now.

Your job (the important bit)

You are responsible for driving safely and legally. Obey traffic laws, posted signs, and road conditions. Confirm that roads are open and appropriate before you go. Do not stare at a phone while driving.

You use Astray and any route it suggests at your own risk. If a plan looks sketchy, it might be. Pick another line, or ask a human who has been there recently.

When you hand the wheel to another app

Optional “send to maps” features open an external navigation app with your trip endpoints (and related route details as supported). That share happens only when you choose it. Once you leave Astray, the other app’s privacy policy and terms apply.

We are not responsible for how that app routes you, what it shows, or what it collects.

Server brain or pocket brain

You can run route planning and place search on our servers (“server mode”) or, where available, on your device (“on-device mode”). In server mode, trip endpoints and planning parameters are sent to our API so we can return a route comparison. In on-device mode, much of that work can stay on your phone after map data is downloaded.

You choose the mode. Changing it may require downloading map data or talking to the network again. Details live in the Privacy Policy.

The map is a best-effort mosaic

Astray’s graph and places data are derived from OpenStreetMap and other sources, processed into our own tiles and indexes. Coverage has edges. Outside supported regions, or on sparse roads, planning may fail or look thin. We try to say so honestly.

Please don’t be a jerk to the infrastructure

Use the Service only for lawful personal or small-team route planning. Do not abuse, scrape, overload, or reverse-engineer the API, tiles, or app in a way that harms availability for others. Do not try to use Astray to circumvent access controls or to build a competing bulk routing dump off our endpoints.

We may rate-limit, suspend, or block access that looks abusive.

No warranty (yes, the boring paragraph)

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT ROUTES ARE ACCURATE, SAFE, OPEN, OR SUITABLE FOR YOUR TRIP.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, Formentia LLC AND ITS OPERATORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE OR RELIANCE ON ANY ROUTE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS (US $100) OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM (CURRENTLY: ZERO), WHICHEVER IS GREATER.

Some places do not allow certain limitations; in those places, our liability is limited to the fullest extent the law allows.

If you make a mess

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Formentia LLC and its people from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of your misuse of the Service, your driving, or your violation of these Terms, except to the extent caused by our willful misconduct.

When we rewrite the trail notes

We may update these Terms from time to time. The “Terms version” (2026-07-21 today) and effective date will change when we do. The app stores the version you accepted and will ask you to accept again before you keep using it if that version bumps. Continued use of the website after updated Terms are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

Law of the high plains

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Courts in Wyoming will have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes, except where applicable law gives you mandatory rights to sue elsewhere.
